Event Description:
Sold-out houses and standing ovations characterize the performances of the renowned Aspen String Trio. After twenty years of friendship and music-making, Aspen String Trio members David Perry, Victoria Chiang, and Michael Mermagen have joined together as an ensemble with magical synergy. These three world-class instrumentalists each have a long-time association as artist-faculty with the Aspen Music Festival; combined they have performed across the globe in the world’s most prestigious venues. “The energy, spontaneity, and sheer enjoyment we find together is a constant inspiration to us, and a joy to our audiences!” They delight in offering—with humor and insight—virtuoso performances of the rich string trio repertoire, including works by Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert, as well as lesser known blockbuster works by Dohnany, Hindemith, Martinu, Rozsa, Gideon Klein, Veress, Villa-Lobos and Ysaye, among others. Recent and upcoming performances and residencies include Chicago, Arlington and Waco, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, The University of Delaware, and Baltimore, where for six seasons they were the Ensemble-in-Residence at the University of Baltimore. A notable upcoming recording project includes recording the string trios and other music of Martinu° for the Naxos label. Violinist David Perry has appeared as soloist with the Chicago and St. Louis symphony orchestras, among many others. For many years concertmaster of the Aspen Chamber Symphony and member of the artist/faculty at the Aspen Music Festival, he is first violinist with the Pro Arte Quartet and concertmaster of the Chicago Philharmonic. Active with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra on many Carnegie Hall concerts, Deutsche Grammophon recordings and world tours, Mr. Perry is Artist-in-Residence and Professor of Violin at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Mr. Perry's Naxos recording of concertos by Ignaz Pleyel with the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra has recently been released to acclaim on the Naxos label. Violist Victoria Chiang is an active performer as soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. Her recording of viola concertos by Stamitz and Hoffmeister with the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra has been released on the Naxos label, joining her recordings of Ignaz Pleyel's Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola, also on the Naxos label, and the Shostakovich and Roslavets Viola Sonatas. A member of the artist-faculty of the Peabody Conservatory and the Aspen Music Festival, she has performed as guest artist with the Guarneri, Takacs, Tokyo, Pro Arte, Arianna and American String Quartets. Additionally, Ms. Chiang has performed and taught at Domaine Forget, The Heifetz Institute, Madeline Island Chamber Music Festival, Bargemusic Series and the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, among others. Cellist Michael Mermagen made his debut at the age of sixteen with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra after receiving the Young Soloist's Award. He was a soloist with the National Orchestra of New York, where he held the prestigious Emanuel Feuermann principal cello chair. He also performed in the Violoncello Society of New York Master Classes led by Yo-Yo Ma, Janos Starker, and Bernard Greenhouse. Currently a member of the artist-faculty of the Benjamin Rome School of Music of the Catholic University, his chamber music appearances have included tours with The Aspen Ensemble, the American Chamber Players, and the Arista Piano Trio. As an artist-faculty member at the Aspen Music Festival and School, he has been principal cellist of the Aspen Chamber Symphony for nearly twenty seasons. He has been heard on WQXR's Concerts Plus, WNYC's Around New York, APM's Performance Today, and A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor
